At Patcham Junior School we aim to provide pupils with stimulating and inclusive design opportunities to access and understand a rapidly evolving world. We aim for pupils to be inspired by engineers, designers, makers, and chefs to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products using real world purposes to motivate them. We seek to take inspiration from design throughout history. An inclusive range of designers from history and from around the world are showcased in each unit. We believe that as designers, children must consider the needs of the user, the materials, function, shape, colour, pattern, problem solving and the impact on our environment.
We aim to provide pupils with opportunities to generate ideas and solutions during the design process and to use a range of tools and equipment to realise their design ideas. Pupils will learn to consider functional and aesthetic qualities and to evaluate their work. Making is, and always will be, a key aspect of the subject, but the process is as, if not more, important than the end product. In fact, there doesn’t always have to be an end product. We aim to give pupils a secure understanding of a healthy and diet and provide them with cooking and food preparation experiences.
